I have been involved in many Buddhist temple activities abroad. I have also realized the difficulties in the construction of temples in other countries. Therefore, after being Presidents of Wat Dhammaram in Chicago, Wat Buddhavas in Houston, and Wat Buddharangsi in Miami, I had no intention in building any more temples.
In 2002, however, I had invited Her Majesty the Queen, HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, and HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha for a special royal ceremony at Wat Buddhavas, Houston. At that time, some people from Boston who also attended the ceremony had invited me for assistance in constructing a commemorative temple in Boston. I had then reported to Her Majesty the Queen and HRH, and invited Phra Maha Dr. Winai from Wat Phrom Kunaram, Arizona, Secretary of Thai Sangha Association in the United States for a visit to Boston. After visiting the towns and locations where His Majesty the King’s parents resided as well as the place where His Majesty was born, the apartment and the school where His Majesty attended, I realized that the Boston City felt a great honor that His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, Rama IX of Thailand was born there. In addition, there have been many royalties who have visited Boston. This made me feel that Boston was so special. Therefore, I have accepted the Commemorative Construction Project, as a Thai monk who truly respects His Majesty the King of Thailand. It was not only me, but also the Thai community in Boston, Massachusetts who registered Wat Nawamintararachutis as a non-profit organization with its first mission to establish a center for Buddhists to recognize the birthplace of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, Rama IX of Thailand who is the only monarch of a foreign country to be born in the USA. Since His Majesty was born at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Wat Nawamintararachutis committee and I wanted to find a location to build a temple in Cambridge area. We thought that the location was very important, and therefore, we needed to find a suitable piece of land and would consider including a construction project as part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of his coronation on June 9, 2006. Four years passed by, we have found neither any suitable land in Cambridge nor nearby towns for such a royal temple. We were only able to find some small pieces of land which were also very expensive. Therefore, we had to look further away from the city but it could not be more than 30 minutes to one hour from downtown Boston. We did not really have funds at the time either. Finally, we found a 55-acre waterfront property on 382 South Street East, Raynham, Massachusetts 02767. The location is perfect and not too far away from the communities. It’s quite suitable to become a center of Buddhism as a royal temple. We then decided to purchase this property for $1,500,000 using a long-term loan. I urge you all to help make great merit with any kind of donation to commemorate our beloved His Majesty the King, who has given tremendous devotion to Thailand. Forms of donations can not only be money, but also your devotion of ideas and energy to assist this commemorative construction project as well as your prayers for the success of the project. 1. Great Honors Received in Thailand
• On May 3, 1992 Phra Phromwachirayan received a Royal Sao Semadhammachak and a Certificate of Honor from the HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in Promotion of Buddhism in Oversea. • In 1995, Phra Phromwachirayan received an honorary doctoral degree in Bhuddhism from Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University. • In 2000, Phra Phromwachirayan received an honorary doctoral degree in Education from Academic Resources Center and Information Technology Ubon Ratchathani. The degree was specially given by HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn at Suan Amporn Park on June 19, 2000. • In 2000, Phra Phromwachirayan received an honorary doctoral degree in Educations from Ramkhamhaeng University. The degree was presented to him on December 22, 2000.
2. Great Honors Received Abroad
• In 1986, Phra Phromwachirayan received a Distinguished Award in social service from the Board of Directors of Asian Human Service of Chicago.
• On July 8, 1990, Phra Phromwachirayan was granted honorary residence in Chicago, Illinois from the City of Chicago. • On August 15, 1990, a Certificate of Acknowledgment from Richard M. Daley, the Mayor of Chicago, was presented to Phra Phromwachirayan at Wat Dhammaram for his goodwill to Asian and American communities in Chicago, Illinois.
• On April 8, 1991, Phra Phromwachirayan received a Certificate of Acknowledgment from Paul Simon, the U.S. Senator, for promoting Buddhism and Thai culture in the United States. • In 1997, Mr. Richard M. Daley, the Mayor of Chicago recognized May 24 (Phra Phromwachirayan’s birthday) of each year to be the Buddhism and Thai Culture Promotion Day in Chicago. • On September 13, 1999, Phra Phromwachirayan was granted a great recognition from George H. Ryan, the Governor of Illinois, as a religious leader and a person of great assistance to Thais and other foreigners in the United States.
Phra Phromwachirayan is the first Thai monk as well as the first person from Thailand to receive these distinguished awards for his high achievements.
